- Summer
auditions for String Orchestra, Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra
- When: Monday evenings JUNE 3
and JUNE 10 between 4 and 9 pm
- Where: Indian River Middle School in
Chesapeake
- What: The Bay Youth Orchestras of
Virginia will be holding open auditions for the String Orchestra, Concert Orchestra and
Symphony Orchestra. Young musicians who are members of their school band or orchestra are
welcome to audition. There is an audition fee of $5.00 and audition applications are
available by calling 618-1800. If you are auditioning for the Symphony Orchestra you must
request orchestral excerpts when you call.See prerequisites and audition requirements for
each group below.

All students are required to
participate in their school music program to participate. Annual tuition for 2002-2003 is
listed below. Scholarships are available based upon financial need.

Symphony Orchestra must contact Bay Youth for orchestral excerpts to be prepared for the
audition. (See Audition requirement below.)
A $5 non-refundable application
fee must accompany the completed registration form.
Audition
requirements:
Junior
String Orchestra [top]
The Junior String Orchestra holds
rehearsals performs in two concert programs each season, under the direction of Christina
Morton. This ensemble is specifically for students, grades 3-7, who have at least one full
year of instrument study and have a good basic understanding of how to play their
instrument. Students should be familiar with all the notes on all the strings in first
position for the keys of G, D, and C major.
Rehearsals: Monday
evenings from 5:00-6:00 p.m.
Annual Tuition: $150.00
Audition requirements:
Auditions to be held on September 23, 2002 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at
the Indian River Middle School Annex, on Providence Road, Chesapeak,
VA.
Audition Fee : $5.00
First Rehearsal:
Monday, October 7, 2002 at the Indian River Middle School Annex (This
is a change from the letter that was sent out earlier this fall).

String
Orchestra [top]
The String Orchestra performs two to
three programs per season under the direction of Christina Morton and Linda Althoff.
Emphasis is placed on developing ensemble skills in a disciplined rehearsal atmosphere.
Students should be able to perform grade 3-4 music, play in the keys of C,D, and G major,
D and G minor displaying solid position, good posture, and the ability to shift into
different positions. Seriousness of purpose and careful attention to correct bow and
instrument hold are as important as music reading skills and tone production. Private
instruction is strongly recommended.
Rehearsals- Monday
evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Annual Tuition- $180.00
Audition requirements:
- Two octave scale in the keys listed
above will be requested.
- 3-minute piece (grade 3-4) to
demonstrate level of ability
- Sight-reading will be required.
Concert
Orchestra [top]
The Concert Orchestra performs three
to four programs per season under the direction of Helen Martell. This group offers
advanced students the opportunity to perform in a full orchestra with strings, woodwinds,
brass, and percussion. The emphasis is on advanced ensemble playing, rehearsal discipline,
and raising student's musical expectations. Students should be able to perform level 4 and
5 music, have the motivation to improve musical skills, and demonstrate the discipline to
participate in longer rehearsals. Private instruction is strongly recommended.
Rehearsal:- Monday evenings from 7-9
p.m.
Annual Tuition: $270.00

Strings, Woodwinds, and Brass:
- 3-minute excerpt from level 4 - 5
solo or etude literature demonstrating level of ability
- All major scales-2 octaves
- Sight-reading

Symphony
Orchestra [top]
The Symphony Orchestra performs
three to four programs per season under the direction of Leslie Stewart, Music Director
for Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia. The Side-By-Side Concert with the Virginia Symphony
is an opportunity to rehearse and perform beside professional musicians under the
direction of the Virginia Symphony's Associate Conductor. The Symphony Orchestra also
offers regular sectional coaching with members of the Virginia Symphony. The Annual
Concerto Concert features selected soloist(s) from the Symphony Orchestra based on
auditions held each fall. Members must demonstrate proficiency on their instrument to meet
the challenges of performing standard orchestral literature. Strings should be able to
play spiccato and martele, have functional vibrato, and have a working knowledge of all of
the positions. Winds and brass must be able to articulate cleanly in a variety of
tempos/styles and demonstrate wide dynamic range with good tone production.

Annual Tuition: $325.00
Audition requirements:
Strings, Woodwinds and Brass:
- 3-minute excerpt from a standard
concerto or sonata
- Required orchestral excerpt
- Strings-3 octave scale of choice
- Winds and Brass-All major scales-2
octaves
Percussion:
- Two 2-minute excerpts from rudiment
books on at least 2 of the following instruments: snare drum, timpani, xylophone
(Instruments will be provided)
